The AEMRI Project is to be extended until June 2023 following the granting of an additional £890,000 of EU funding. This funding will increase the number of researchers and partners able to work with the state-of-the-art testing and evaluation facility, and bringing the total EU project funding to date to £8.4m.
Speaking on the news, Ian Nicholson, project manager for AEMRI at TWI Wales, said, “AEMRI has enabled TWI Wales to remain at the cutting-edge of research in non-destructive testing. This is not only our view, but is backed up by feedback from industry. As a result, we’ve increased our R&D income through a range of large projects, which has, in turn, helped create 20 new jobs at our base in Port Talbot.”
Ian continued, “These new jobs, stronger collaboration with universities, and resulting joint PhD/EngD students is laying the path to developing generations of highly skilled research engineers, knowledge creation and an enduring legacy for Wales.”
He concluded, "This further confidence and funding from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government will support TWI to continue to drive business growth and competitiveness for manufacturing and engineering organisations, not only in Wales, but in the UK and worldwide too."
The Advanced Engineering Materials Research Institute (AEMRI) is funded by the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) using European Regional Development Funds (ERDF).
